Review (Cardinals GM)
After a solid season last year, in which they reached the postseason, the Texas Rangers have decided to continue selling off assets after a poor 11-16 start. Randall Rosenthal, the reigning AL Cy Young, is moved in-division to the Las Vegas Gamblers, who paid a pretty price for the ace. The Rangers will receive two first-round draft selections, including #11 in the upcoming midseason draft, and veterans Teddy Garcia and Mark Lost. Although Rosenthal is the type of player the Rangers would ostensibly like to keep, as he’s young and talented, but perhaps the team received signs that he was unwilling to sign long-term.
Randall Rosenthal - top-ten pitcher in the league, great story, well-liked by his peers, Rosenthal is the type of player every team wants. He should be in line for a big payday.
Mark Lost - a long-time Gambler, Lost must have been blindsided by the move, as he goes from a playoff contender to cellar dweller. Perhaps he can mentor the next generation of Rangers and turn them into consummate professionals.
Teddy Garcia - the journeyman, Garcia has pitched inconsistently, mixing in good seasons with mediocre ones. He has matured into a fine pitcher since he was traded midseason from the Cardinals to the Blue Jays.
Rangers Grade: B-
If the Rangers had to move Rosenthal, they did well. If they didn’t, well…I question why the move was made.
Gamblers Grade: B
Vegas gave up a haul, but neither of the two players they gave up were under contract for next year. The picks will hurt, but if they extend Rosenthal, it will be worth it. The Gamblers have eyes on the Diamondbacks, and Rosenthal may be the piece that helps them catch the leaders.
October 9 - Twins and Astros
Twins send---
Harvey Drake | Yehoshua Thomas | Todd Malloy | Jadyn Fielder | Devin Bridgewater
Astros send---
Taddy Harper | Jagger Bartlett | Marcus Boykin | Curt Gregg | Will Pratt | Rich Gronkowski | Tyler Kitchen
Review (Lions GM)
This trade between the Twins and Astros was very interesting for both sides. The Astros really couldn't do much to improve a championship team; however, adding a stud like Fielder was an improvement. The Twins are a team working on a rebuild and wanted some pieces to reboot their championship franchise. Let's take a look at the players in the deal:
Jadyn Fielder - an All-star OF with a rocket arm, great defense, and awesome power, he also carries a heavy price tag at $40M/ year. He is one of the top outfielders in the game.
Yehoshua Thomas - In many ways he is a poor man's Fielder. He has the rocket arm, but has much less defense and power. At 27, he will still improve. He will be a starter in this league.
Todd Malloy - currently a AAA starter, will likely never break into the Astros rotation. He may have minimal value as a 5th starter somewhere.
Harvey Drake - he has potential as a defensive replacement OF, but probably not in Houston.
Devin Bridgewater - terrible offensive player with great defense, who might get a chance somewhere as a defensive CF. Again, probably not in Houston.
Taddy Harper - bottom-of-the-rotation starter, will be a good, cheap option for the Twins rotation for 5 years or so.
Jagger Bartlett - middle-of-the-rotation starter in 1-2 seasons. Will also be a good, cheap option for the Twins rebuild.
Marcus Boykin - solid defensive 1B, with some power. He can be a starter, but will most likely be a backup or journeyman. He can start in Minnesota until they find their franchise 1B.
Curt Gregg - solid starting OF with great power and good defense. He struggled to get playing time in Houston, but started in 2035 and had a solid year. He should lighten the loss of Fielder, but will need to be resigned.
Will Pratt - borderline prospect, who may (or may not) develop into a bottom-of-the-rotation starter.
Rich Gronkowski - an All-star DH that fits nicely into the lineup for Twins. No real value past 2037.
Tyler Kitchen - a great defensive 2B with some speed. Not a major offensive threat, but will most likely be a solid starter at an important position for the Twins.
In Conclusion, I think this trade gave the Twins some good pieces, but I think they could have gotten younger, better long-term prospects for Fielder.
Advantage: Astros
